New terrorist group eyes airliner attacks - CBS News

A new terrorist group with long ties to Al Qaeda is planning to hijack airliners, just as happened on September 11, 2001, according to a new report by CBS News.

The group is called Khorasan and is operating in Syria along side the disparate Islamic State groups, but has its origins with al Qaeda back in Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Amnesty International claims widespread human rights abuses in Nigeria

Amnesty International has released a report slamming Nigeria's police and military for what it says is the routine torture of men, women and children as young as 12. 

The report found up to 10,000 people have been arrested since 2009 and many have died in random executions in prison.

Ukraine President Asks US for "Special Security Status" and Arms

The President of Ukraine has requested additional U.S. military equipment and a special security status.

Petro Poroshenko made the plea for help in countering the influence of Russian backed rebels during an address to a joint session of the U.S. Congress.

British reporter appears in new Islamic State video

Islamic State militants have released a videotape showing a kidnapped British reporter who says he's being held by the group.


John Cantlie disappeared in Syria in November 2012.


In a scripted message that he reads to-camera, he says he will be presenting a series of "programs" in the next few days that will "convey some facts" to western audiences about Islamic State.

Russia set to imposes limits of foreign ownership of media organisations

The Kremlin in Russia is set to support a proposed bill to limit foreign ownership of media organizations in Russia to a 20 per cent stake.

Voting underway in Scotland's historic Independence Referendum


After years of preparations, Scots across the country have now started to cast their votes in the country's Independence referendum. 

The number of people registered to vote is the highest ever in Scotland, with 97% of the electorate expected to head out to decide whether Scotland should remain in the UK or leave the more than 300 year old union.

Internet Billionaires Lead US Space Development

With relations at their lowest ebb since the end of the Cold War the United States is taking steps to reduce its dependency on Russia in outer space.

 

Since the Space Shuttle program was ended in 2011 NASA has been reliant upon Russia to ferry astronauts to and from the International Space Station, while the Atlas V (five) rocket used to launch many commercial satellites, is powered by Russian-made engines.

US Fed rules up quick rate rise

World Bank: Ebola Outbreak Could Cost Billions of Dollars

The World Bank has said that the current outbreak of ebola in West Africa could drain billions of dollars from economies in the region by the end of next year, if the disease isn't brought under control.
