Ebola tearing through Liberia with broad implications, says UN special envoy


More than 2000 people have died in the worst recorded Ebola outbreak, with Liberia accounting for half of that death toll, and numbers are expected to keep rising.


The UN mission in Liberia is calling for more assistance from the world to help an outbreak that is spiraling out of control.

Scientists Alarmed Over Major Rise in Greenhouse Gases

The concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmopshere has accelerated at the fastest pace in thirty years, according to the World Meteorological Organization.

The UN organization's figures are considered the most accurate and the recorded levels for 2013 are intensifying fears of an acceleration in global warming.

Obama Meets Congressional Leaders on Islamic State Strategy

US President Barack Obama is meeting with Republican and Democratic leaders,  as he tries to persuade Congress to back his plan to deal with Sunni militant group the Islamic State.

Britain sends arms to Iraq

Britain's Ministry of Defence has said it will send arms to Iraq's newly formed government.


The equipment will arrive on Wednesday and cements the UK's commitment to combatting the militant Islamic State movement, by helping the Iraqi government and Kurdish forces to defend themselves.

Campaign to keep Scotland as part of Britain heats up

British Prime Minister David Cameron, his deputy Nick Clegg and the leader of the opposition Ed Miliband are all to travel to Scotland Wednesday in a bid to bolster the No campaign, as Scottish voters head towards the September 18th referendum on independence. 

The political opponents are putting aside their differences to ask Scots to stay with the union as opinion polls show the Yes and No camps are evenly divided.

This week the British government unveiled a package of measures along with a timetable  to devolve further powers to the Scottish parliament, if voters say no to independence. 

 Pro independence campaigner described the mvoe as a desperate bribe.....

The leader of the Labour party in Scotland, Johann Lamont said these promised changes were a reason to reject independence.

Russia's Foreign Minister says ceasefire holding as EU mulls sanctions timing

Russia's Foreign Minister says that a ceasefire in eastern Ukraine was holding, "in general," and said he hoped talks on the status of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions would begin soon.


It comes after the EU adopted new sanctions against Russia over its destabilisation of Ukraine, though Brussels didn't say when they would be put into effect.

Gordon Brown enlisted for last minute campaign to save the Union

The British government has announced new plans to devolve powers to the Scottish parliament, in the event that Scottish residents vote No to independence at the referendum on September 18th. 

Opinion polls show both the Yes and No campaigns to independence are neck and neck.   The British government has enlisted former Prime Minister Gordon Brown in a last-ditch campaign to save the union. 

The former Labour leader unveiled  proposals and a timetable to devolve further powers away from Westminster to the Scottish parliament. 

Speaking at the first appearance of a ten day tour to get out the No vote, Mr Brown said there was no need to severe Scotland's historic union with Britain.

Kerry travels to Middle East to discuss ISIL threat


America's top diplomat is travelling to the Middle East  to discuss the situation in Iraq and the threat from Islamic State militants.    

It comes after the US praised the Iraqi government following the formation of a new cabinet that shares out posts between  the Shia Arab majority, Sunni Arabs and Kurds.

Dutch experts say MH17 was hit by numerous objects

Dutch experts investigating the downing of flight MH17 over Eastern Ukraine say it was hit by 'numerous objects' that 'pierced the plane at high speed'.
