NATO agrees the creation of rapid reaction military force

NATO leaders ending a two day summit in the Welsh city of Newport have agreed to the creation of a rapid reaction force that could be deployed anywhere within two days.

The four thousand strong force, the spearhead force, will be led by a British general and is due to be deployment-ready by the end of 2015.

British Prime Minister David Cameron said the UK would be contributing one thousand troops to the force, which he described as essential to ensure NATO could act swiftly.

The headquarters of the force will be in Poland with forward units based in eastern countries.   The development comes following an apparent breakthrough in peace talks between pro-Russian rebels and Ukrainian forces in eastern Ukraine.

Olly Barratt at the summit in Newport says the creation of the force is a response to this crisis.
